On April 18, 2017, Georgetown University held a Liturgy of Remembrance, Contrition, and Hope in partnership with the Society of Jesus, and the Archdiocese of Washington and in consultation with the descendant community. During this Liturgy, Georgetown and the Society of Jesus’ Maryland Province offered an apology for their roles in the 1838 sale, in the company of more than 100 descendants. Descendants offered reflections and readings during this special ceremony.
During this gathering, the Georgetown community also dedicated two buildings on campus: Isaac Hawkins Hall and Anne Marie Becraft Hall. More than 100 descendants were in attendance for these gatherings.
